Brands

Swiss-made timepieces are said to be the finest in production today. If so, then this brand must be the premier example of the luxury genre. They created the first skeleton dial and pioneered some of the most complex timepieces ever made. The company has set a record that still stand for the world’s smallest five-minute repeater movement. They produced industry altering innovations like dual-time displays. It survived the Great Depression despite having production grind to a nearly complete halt. The company is the only one of its kind that remains in the hands of its founding families, ensuring that the legacy of excellence will safely continue long into the future.

What We Love About Audemars Piguet

This brand’s reputation was not built on Hollywood patronage or slick marketing but on generations of incredible craftsmanship and service. They have become famous only for being exceptional watchmakers, not fashion designers or popular artists. There is something special about wearing a small machine that runs indefinitely on its own power, with only a little basic maintenance. The automatic movements made by this company do just that. Each model is made as it has always been done: one at a time. An Audemars Piguet watch will be a legacy, handed down from generation to generation.

These timepieces use only the best raw materials: 18-kt gold cases, transparent sapphire crystals, even diamond embellishments. Their design is also extraordinary and stunning without being ostentatious. Incorporating seamless hidden clasps into the bracelets and beautiful styling into the faces, the final product is one of outstanding luxury. Classic models have the lost look of old world elegance while newer creations are wearing the bright colors of today’s runways. The dials are truly striking works of art. Timepiece aficionados will appreciate the name and recognize its distinctive characteristics on sight. Audemars Piguet will certainly become collector’s items one day, like so many of their predecessors already have.

Some Things We Don’t Like About Audemars Piguet

The materials used in these products are not to be had cheaply. These timepieces carry a price equal to their entirely handcrafted construction and first-rate materials. They must be treated like the gems that they are. It is not a timepiece to be worn for extremely hard use. Once the investment is made in such an accessory, most will want to protect it. Keep in mind that this is a delicate miniature machine, with tiny ticking gears that should not be needlessly banged about. Some models will need to be wound by hand and all will need periodic oiling of the gears and other basic maintenance. The company advises buyers to have this routine service performed only by the company itself.

Company History

Audemars Piguet is the child of Swiss natives, Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet, and was born in 1875 when the two joined forces. Oddly, the company was not officially founded until 1889, despite already being a large employer and manufacturer. The two decided to produce all their components “in-house” for complete quality control of their men’s watches. This attracted the likes of Tiffany & Co., who wanted their own name put on the Swiss creations. The partners designed innovative and incredibly complex movements until their death in 1918 and 1919, respectively. The business went on to produce moderate quantities of the highest quality, enhancing their exclusive appeal. However, The Crash nearly obliterated the company. Production diminished to a Depression-era low of only two timepieces for the entire year of 1932. Managing to scrape by, production rebounded after World War II and culminated in the introduction of new innovations in the 1970s. Remaining in the hands of the founder’s families, this company is sure to remain the scion of excellence it has always been.
